When the next speaking
opportunity comes along, start with the question: “Do you have a
budget for speakers?” If they say no, don’t be discouraged.
It often means the organizers need to find out what’s possible. If they say
yes, then consider the costs you might incur, keeping in mind costs for travel,
accommodations, meals and your time. OK, it’s no longer a secret so
why aren’t you asking? This week, research 5 associations in your area, call
and ask them the question. If you think you might “ruin” your chances to speak
by being so “forward”, here’s my BIG secret:
Research associations in
another state; some distance from your home, contact them and ask the question.
Who knows, this may lead to a speaking engagement with your travel, meals and
lodging paid!
