When Edwin C. Barnes climbed down from the freight train in Orange,
N.J., more than 30 years ago, he may have resembled a tramp, but his thoughts
were those of a king!
As he made his way from the railroad tracks to Thomas A. Edison’s
office, his mind was at work. He saw himself standing in Edison’s presence. He
heard himself asking Mr. Edison for an opportunity to carry out the one
CONSUMING OBSESSION OF HIS LIFE, a BURNING DESIRE to become the business
associate of the great inventor.
Barnes’ desire was not a hope!
It was not a wish! It was a keen, pulsating
DESIRE, which transcended everything else. It was DEFINITE.
You may have heard of Edison (who hasn’t) but you may not
know of Barnes, his assistant. Yes, he did become his assistant over time. The
formula for his success is in this above passage from the book called Think and
Grow Rich. So your first lesson from reading this should be to read and learn
about Barnes and get your personal copy of the book Think and Grow Rich. Now, I’ll
continue.
You are reading this because you have a desire to get
more bookings. But your preceding desire must be that you want to speak, and
that you have something; a message with a burning desire to present and
preceding that a love for others which puts all of these other desires behind
that of enriching your audience! With your ultimate and main desire first being
others; your audience we again will continue with a formula for getting more
bookings.
Again I direct you to the short excerpt from Think and
Grow Rich; the formula lies there. Use it for your desire to help others, to speak,
and to get bookings and even paid to speak. Here I’ll use it to “get booked”.

Put your mind to work. Think of ways to promote yourself,
your message. Think of the reasons why someone would want to hear your message,
be helped by your message and book you to present your message!
See yourself standing before the person who is booking
your event. How are you dressed, how are you speaking? (How are you
listening?). Visualize yourself actually accomplishing this step of acting out
your steps to get you in front of this person.
Hear your words. Should you adjust them to be talking
about you and your “product” or speaking in the terms of the other person’s
interests as Dale Carnegie tells us to do?
And then don’t hope or wish, but put feet to your desire.
Research people who would love to hear your message, and then contact them and
get in front of the person who books speakers!
If speaking, if your message is not a white hot,
pulsating DESIRE, a message you are not living every moment of your day,
something you think of when you wake until your head hits your bed then you won’t
be able to “sell” it to any booking person; you are not genuine!
I have a track that I live with, base my day and life on,
and use it to as a track to coach and speak on; it’s the Major 8. I find so
many things which I read and learn bring me back to it and so it is a BURNING
DESIRE to speak, share and help others with.
Follow the steps outlined from Think and Grow Rich as the
starting point of all achievement as the starting point of your message, your speaking
and you getting booked and you will get booked!
